LINCOLN, Neb. — Dairy farmers in Nebraska are worried that milk prices could skyrocket if Congress fails to pass a new farm bill by the end of the year.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/VYFJFL) that the farmers say current milk prices of about $3.65 a gallon could double after the first of the year.

Humboldt dairy farmer Ben Steffen is one producer that believes failure of Congress to pass a farm bill would mean an automatic return to much higher milk support prices.

Steffen and other Nebraska producers say such a jump in prices would drive milk consumption down and be devastating for the industry.

Farmers say little information has come out of the House and Senate about farm bill proposals and time is running out for farmers and consumers.
