altPLAINVIEW, Texas (AP) — The idling of a Cargill beef-processing plant in West Texas has forced the closure of the company that cleaned the facility.

The Amarillo Globe-News (http://bit.ly/XGIWw5 ) reports Tuesday that Packers Sanitation Services laid off 125 employees Feb. 1, the same day Cargill closed.

Wisconsin-based Packers Sanitation notified the Texas Workforce Commission in a letter the agency received Feb. 5.

Cargill laid off 2,000 workers but has plans to possibly reopen if cattle supplies increase. The plant is in Plainview, about 45 miles north of Lubbock.

Federal figures show that in Texas, the nation's largest cattle-producing state, the herd shrank 5 percent in the past year, to 11.3 million head.

The U.S. inventory of cattle and calves last month was the lowest since 1952, down 2 percent from January 2012.
