The historian James Truslow Adams once wrote: “There are
two types of education. One should teach us how to make a living, and the other
how to live.” KansasStateUniversity and EmporiaStateUniversity have been highly successful at doing
both for more than a century. |

On January 29, 1861, our state was founded on the ideals of personal freedom and individual liberty. The 152nd anniversary serves as a time to challenge all Kansans to carry on the enduring legacy of our founders.

Kansas Common Sense
On
Wednesday morning, I had an opportunity to question U.S. Secretary of Labor
Hilda Solis about her Department’s proposal to ban youth under the age of 16
from participating in many common farm-related activities during a Labor/HHS
Appropriations Subcommittee hearing.

Over the last few months, the American people have endured the many ups and downs of an ever-changing debate in Congress over whether we should raise the debt ceiling for the eleventh time in the last decade. I, along with many of my colleagues, hoped we could use this moment in history to bring about significant change to the way business is conducted in Washington, D.C.

It’s harvest time in Kansas. And while most Americans associate harvest with autumn leaves and Thanksgiving, Kansans think of hot southern winds that ripen the wheat and signal it’s time to get the combine ready for what they hope will be a good crop. Ever since Kansas’ first settlers converted the prairie from a sea of tall grass into amber waves of grain, families have labored together during the summer months to bring in the harvest.

President Ronald Reagan said: “If you seek peace, if you seek prosperity … if you seek liberalization … Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” Almost 23 years later, that same logic holds true, only the government is not the Soviet Union and the wall is not made of bricks and mortar. Instead, the country is Cuba and the wall is U.S. laws and regulations that inhibit food and agricultural sales and prohibit American citizens from traveling to Cuba. |

The Senate passed Majority Leader Harry Reid’s health care reform bill by a vote of 60-39 on Christmas Eve. I am opposed to this legislation and offended that the writing of this bill was driven by deal-making, personal handouts and political payoffs instead of reasonable public policy.

November 11th, we observe Veterans Day to honor those who have served our country in the military and protected our way of life. Kansans can be proud that our state has a long history of supporting our country’s veterans in gratitude for their service. These stories have and will continue to inspire people of our state, and nation, to do great things for those who sacrifice on our behalf.

My parents are 92 and 93 and still live in my hometown of Plainville, Kansas, a town with a population of 1900. My Dad has morning coffee with Keith Unrein, our local pharmacist, and Dr. Sanchez paid a house call on my Mom when she slipped and bumped her head a few months back. This sense of community is what I love about my hometown and other small towns across America and this is why the current health care reform debate is so important to me. If we want a future of strong small towns across the country, Congress must address the unique health care needs of rural Americans when crafting health care reform legislation.

Editors Note: A few excerpts from Rep. Jerry Moran's column Agriculture Committee Hearing on Biofuel Regulations On Thursday, the House Agriculture Committee continued its oversight hearings on a recent Environmental Protection Agency rule to place unfair greenhouse gas emission requirements on renewable fuels. EPA has proposed to include indirect greenhouse gas emissions from land use changes in foreign countries, like Brazil, when determining the domestic biofuel industry’s total greenhouse gas emissions. |
