The Soy Transportation Coalition (STC) elected its officers and visited two area entities crucial to the nation's freight-transportation network during the organization's annual meeting Nov. 29-30 in Williamsburg, Va.
During the annual meeting, Mike Bellar, Howard, was elected vice chairman. He had been serving as STC's secretary-treasurer. Mike and his wife, Peggy, have five children and raise soybeans, corn, wheat and swine. He also represents the southeastern district on the Kansas Soybean Commission.
Kentucky's Gerry Hayden was elected chairman, and Minnesota's Joel Schreurs was elected secretary-treasurer.
While in the area, the group visited the headquarters of Norfolk Southern Railway and heard a presentation from the railroad's agricultural services division. They also toured the Virginia International Gateway port facility in Norfolk, Virginia.
Established in 2007, STC comprises 13 state soybean boards, including KSC; the United Soybean Board; and the American Soybean Association. The coalition's goal is to position the soybean industry to benefit from a transportation system that delivers cost-effective and competitive service.
